Aranjuez – Top 10 Attractions and More…

Aranjuez

Aranjuez, the beautiful city famous for its Royal Palace and immense gardens, has so much more to see and experience!

You can take a ride on a historic train that travels on the first Spanish railway line. From the stunning Aranjuez train station, there are many other routes to explore, such as the strawberry season route, where delicious strawberries are served by train staff dressed in traditional costumes.

1- Royal Palace and Gardens

The palace, a graceful symmetrical complex, has been a beloved retreat for royalty throughout the centuries. Taking a stroll through the beautiful gardens, with its abundance of fountains and statues, will surely evoke the melodies of the “Concierto de Aranjuez,” one of the most renowned music compositions in the world by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo.

2- Shopping

Aranjuez is a great town for shopping, although do keep in mind that they observe siesta in the afternoon and many shops may be closed. In the summer, it’s delightful to wander through the shade of the characteristic wide tree-lined avenues. Enjoy a drink and rest on one of the terraces at the City Hall Square, “Plaza de la Constitución,” which is adjacent to the Mercado de Abastos, a food market where you can find unique and fresh products.

3- Chiquitrén (tourist train)

Take a ride on the tourist train and discover the beauty of the historic center and the vastness of the royal gardens, with centuries-old trees, fountains, and statues. This tour offers an unforgettable memory of the city and its history, where composer Joaquín Rodrigo found inspiration for his masterpiece, the “Concierto de Aranjuez.”

4- El tren de la Fresa (strawberry train)

An unmissable journey is the one aboard the steam locomotive with wooden carriages, while enjoying a strawberry tasting served by staff in traditional attire. This train follows the route of the first railway line that connected the capital city of Madrid with the Royal Palace in Aranjuez. The superior Aranjuez strawberry owes its name to its taste and aroma, cultivated in the region’s fertile soil.

5 – La Pavera Beach

A small section of the Tagus River offers you the opportunity to daydream on one of the benches after a walk along the river or a visit to Castillo de Oreja. This little natural corner is beautiful in spring and a refreshing spot during the summer.

6 – Cortijo de San Isidro and the winery

Cortijo de San Isidro is a tiny village worth visiting. Here, you can taste the royal connection with Aranjuez, thanks to its beautiful Plaza Mayor, which is visible from the long avenue leading to it. Step into the magical world of Bodega del Real Cortijo with a tour of this stunning winery and indulge in a tasting of local wines.

7 – El Castillo de Oreja and the abandoned village

The ruins of the castle and village are set in a beautiful environment ideal for hiking. During one of my walks in spring, I was struck by the unique flora in this area. From the cliff near the tall tower of the castle, you can enjoy an impressive view of the region and the Tagus River.

8 – Plaza de Parejas, Iglesia de San Antonio, and Casa de Caballeros

The enormous square (Plaza) owes its name to a type of dance performed on horseback. The church (Iglesia) was built due to limited space in the royal chapel. The houses (Casa) around the square used to accommodate the royal family’s court.

9 – El Rastro de Aranjuez (market)

Every Saturday, there is a large market with more than 150 stalls. It’s a great place to soak up the atmosphere or buy fresh fruits and vegetables directly from the local farms.

10 – Aranjuez Golf Club

The golf course is accessible to golf enthusiasts of all levels. The well-maintained course is set in a lush green landscape surrounded by the banks of the Tagus River, offering a challenging 9-hole course for a technical golfing experience.
